A34 Comet
The last of the British Cruiser Tanks to enter service before the end of World War II, the Comet was an evolution of the Cromwell. Although it retains similarities to the Cromwell, the Comet was mostly welded together and the larger turret housing a 77mm gun was particularly advanced, with frontal armor up to 110mm thick. Given the higher mass, the Christie suspension was revised and supplemented with return rollers. Serial production of the Comet totaled 1,186 tanks out of the 3,000 planned and only 143 had been manufactured by the end of 1944. The Comets experienced their baptism of fire in March 1945 as the Allies crossed the Rhine. If the opportunities to confront the Tiger and Panther were rare, the 77mm gun was however effective in supporting the infantry against the enemy 88mm and 75mm guns and it resisted the anti-tank Panzerfaust well. After the war, the Comet was replaced by the Centurion tank, but it continued to serve until the late 1950s in Hong Kong and Berlin. He also participated in the Korean War.
